One look at the tousled hair and perpetually unlined faces of Chicago popsters the Smith Westerns (all 18-20 years old) and you might write them off as another Girls, albiet ones who never spent time in a cult. Luckily, an unexpected love of T-Rex drives their ’70s rockers, such as “Weekend” and “Imagine Pt. 3” off their first full-length, Dye It Blonde. This CD release party at Glasslands is an excellent primer for what will drive SXSW 2011: Brooklyn’s Ducktails create Saturday morning nostalgia through sunny electronica while Bass Drum of Death sounds like the stuff of trashy teenage knife fights.
