Have you seen this? Apparently Walmart, who is making a very public push win hearts and minds in New York City, launched a new website today at WalmartNYC.com. Splayed across the very top is the above graphic, right under the tagline “Helping NYC Save Money and Live Better.” Oh, really?
Also included on the site are goops of selectively positive press, including video from when “New Yorkers gathered at City Hall in December to call for more jobs and choices for consumers in New York.” Plus, “a roundup of what people are saying in our quotes section.” People, like Mayor Bloomberg’s spokesman Andrew Brent, are saying things like:
“People that live in this city are going outside the city to shop at Wal-Mart, so if they’re going to shop at Wal-Mart they might as well live here. They might as well have the jobs here and the tax revenues here. The City does not have the right to say to one business, ‘You can’t come here,’ and we’re not going to do that.”
Brent is quoted on that page six times in a row.
The company plans to use Wal-Mart New York City to play defense, pushing back on claims made by its detractors, and it will also be used for offense. Visitors can register with the site, leaving their name and address with the company, creating a pool of supporters Wal-Mart can call on in different parts of the city.
“Wal-Mart can’t buy a fig leaf large enough to hide all the harm they would do to our communities and workers if they were to open here,” said Stuart Appelbaum, the president of the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union. “New York is not for sale.”
City Hall will have a meeting about the impending invasion soon. Walmart is boycotting.
