Fools rush in where angels fear to tread: Following the quick demise of both R&L Restaurant and Gansevoort 69, it looks like yet another entrepreneur is attempting to remake the old Florent space in his own image.
Per Eater, Remi Laba, a partner in such establishments as Bagatelle and RdV, appeared at last night’s CB2 meeting to make the case for the 70-seat wine bar/restaurant he’s planning for the space, which was home to Florent from 1985 until 2008, when Florent Morellet was pushed out by an all-too-predictable rent hike.
The committee reportedly wasn’t impressed with Laba’s application, noting that the number of seats listed didn’t match up with those given on the certificate of occupancy and that the menu seemed a bit skimpy for a restaurant. The application was rejected unanimously, though Laba can appeal. Should he prevail, expect more champagne-sodden twattery for the Meatpacking District.
