Each week in The Daily Shot, we have ourselves a drink that we think you should try, too.
The drink: Club President
The bar: El Cobre, 95 Avenue A, East Village, 212-614-6818
The price: $14
The ingredients: Banks Five Island rum, spice, Cocchi Americano, sweet vermouth, maraschino, and Angostura bitters, stirred and served up with an orange-peel garnish.
The buzz: Slightly sweet and orangey with a spicy, bitter finish, the Club President isn’t the kind of drink that first comes to mind when you think of Havana — or even a Havana-themed cocktail bar. A daiquiri, Hemingway’s usual, would probably be your first choice. And it’s a fine one. But for something a little moodier and warming on a cold, dark night like the ones we’ve been experiencing these days, the Club President hits the spot. Sip it as the Virgin of Charity herself, the patron saint of Cuba, looks down on you from her perch overlooking the bar, and know that everything will be OK. If we can just get through the season.
