Montauk’s mostly known to be a resort town with the “charm of the Hamptons without the pretensions,” as Voice gadfly Michael Musto put it last August. Sounds about right for the destination of a show roadtrip, made all the more hospitable by the off-season dearth of summer-rental tourists. Or at least that’s the thinking behind “Meet Me in Montauk,” a daytrip planned by Mewtant Music, the nom de projet of Allegra Oxborough, and starring K Records founder Calvin Johnson and indie-folk rapper Astronautalis.
“I’m friends with Astronautalis and Calvin–Astronautalis grew up on K Records, is a huge Calvin fan–and I wanted to book them a special show together while Calvin is on tour on the East Coast,” explains Oxborough via Facebook, who rented the bus, out of pocket, to shuttle 40 happy kids from Brooklyn to Montauk. The main attraction is, of course, the all-ages evening performance at Montauket (88 Firestone Road, Montauk, NY), a restaurant/bar/hotel renowned for its cliffside location, panoramic sunsets, and “terrible old beds.” Sounds about right. As Oxborough explains triumphantly, “The show is just good old fashioned DIY!”
Transportation costs $30 a person (far cheaper than the Bruise Cruise, fwiw), includes the cost of the show, and leaves at 2pm from Bruar Falls on Thursday, February 10. Tickets onsale here, Facebook event page for “Meet Me in Montauk” is here, and yes, it will be cold, but the venue’s indoors, silly.
