Mayor Bloomberg used his State of the City speech today to announce a significant change to the Department of Health’s letter-grade restaurant-inspection system: Establishments that earn A’s will no longer have to pay fines for violations found during inspection, Diner’s Journal reports. Quoth the mayor, “not one penny.” The announcement marks a welcome change for restaurant owners who have complained that increased inspections under the new letter-grade system have resulted in markedly increased fines. Also on the mayor’s agenda: a simplification and streamlining of the restaurant permitting and inspections process.
