I’ve become mildly obsessed with the silvery sob that the veteran tenor player gave the Beach Boys’ “Caroline No” on last year’s Mirror. It’s pretty much the essence of Lloyd’s style, which searches for rapture without hiding its heavy heart. Like the hymns dotting the disc’s program, King Brian’s original ballad is built on thoughtful lines that embrace the bittersweet. The saxophonist and his working quartet (with pianist Jason Moran) are capable of unabashed romanticism, no doubt.
