The Millrose Games is the only sporting event we know that can trace its lineage to a major department store. In 1908, employees of Wanamaker’s Department Store formed the Millrose Athletic Association, named for the summer home of Rodman Wanamaker, and held a meet at a local armory. Moved to the Garden in 1914 for more space, the games are the oldest continuous event held there. Game winners read like an Olympic Hall of Fame with 202 athletes winning both Olympic and Millrose events. The main event is the Wanamaker Mile, which runs at 9:50 p.m. to cap off the games. This year, look for current World Indoor Champions Christian Cantwell (men’s shot put) and Fabiana Murer (women’s pole vault) to defend their titles.
