Under different circumstances, White Lies singer Harry McVeigh’s baritone delivery could have seemed both melodramatic and monochromatic, and the distinct ’80s pop production wouldn’t have worked in their favor, either. Thankfully, the strong choruses of this year’s Ritual fit nicely between Yeasayer and the Arcade Fire, suggesting Joy Division as fronted by Matt Berninger of the National.
