Beny’s Delice Has Morphed from a Walk-in Patisserie into a Full-Fledged Café


When Beny’s Delice opened its doors last summer in Clinton Hill, neighbors welcomed its excellent pastries and fresh baguettes. The pint-sized patisserie has since become a fully functioning café and favorite hangout for locals seeking to sit with a coffee and snack for as long as the six seats in the cramped space can be occupied without seeming rude — or the lack of bathroom will allow.

Owner David Benizeri has increased the menu items to include pints of soup, salads, sandwiches, and stuffed crepes, as well as homemade foie gras ($55 for 12 ounces) and rillettes to take home. Those looking to claim prime real estate without having too much of an appetite would do well to opt for the perfectly airy chouquettes (pictured), bite-sized puff pastries rolled in powdered sugar before baking to give them a lightly glossy shell. Beny’s are light as helium with just a hint of salt and sweet, a heavenly bite at 25 cents a pop.

Benizeri says he hopes to apply for an outdoor seating permit next summer, which would take the pressure off the limited seating. For now, patrons are (mostly) happy to wait their turn for a stool to free up so they can stake their claim at the narrow counter against the wall or looking out the window — at least until they have to pee.
