With all the foods this town devotes fests to — Asian, kosher, barbecue, even food films — it’s amazing that no one has put on a vegetarian food fest yet. Or rather, it was amazing. The first annual New York City Vegetarian Food Festival is in the works, slated for Sunday, April 3, at the Altman Building in Chelsea.
Organizers are promising that the event will be fun for everyone, including omnivores and flexitarians, with samples from vegetarian restaurants and food purveyors. There will also be stations for nonprofit groups, such as Mercy for Animals, which will hand out literature and “vegetarian starter kits,” and generally spread the “cruelty-free” message. One of the organizers is Sarah Gross, founder of Rescue Chocolate, which specializes in vegan chocolate bars and truffles, and benefits homeless pets. Admission to the fest is free; organizers are still seeking volunteers and accepting applications for vendor tables.
