Barbara Bush, the half of George W. Bush’s twins not on the Today show, stars in a new Human Rights Campaign video in support of marriage equality, “publicly breaking ranks with a father who, as president, pushed for a constitutional amendment banning such unions,” according to the New York Times. But this idea that a 29-year-old woman is somehow disobeying her father by supporting a position that should be obvious seems at once both archaic and manufactured. More shocking is that Bush calls herself “a New Yorker.”
“I am Barbara Bush, and I am a New Yorker for marriage equality,” she says in the spot. “New York is about fairness and equality. And everyone should have the right to marry the person that they love.” Apparently she lives in Manhattan.
Meghan McCain and Mary Cheney, the Times notes, also support same sex marriage in spite of their fathers’ backwards, constituency-appeasing ideas. But what will become of their dowries!
