Even in comparison to Talib Kweli’s finest foils–Mos Def, Hi-Tek, a Nina Simone sample–Res looms large. The largely forgotten Philly r&b songstress is responsible for two of the hottest songs on Kweli’s early-aughts albums, making this new trio project with Trinidadian songwriter Graph Nobel an extremely promising prospect. The strong moments on their debut mixtape are frustratingly far between, but they’re worth sifting for, and hopefully in concert they’ll, er, run a tighter ship. With Dead Prez.
