Vanguard tenor saxophonist Wayne Shorter, who wrote classic compositions for Miles Davis before he got funky and Buddhist, takes influence from Hollywood musicals and Gershwin tunes but turns them on their head. Many listeners have compared him to the auditory equivalent of a Pollock painting. And yet, at 80 years old, he’s still whipping old melodies into something new through his plaintive horn.
