How Much Are Your Tweets Worth? Nicki Minaj Defies the Math


Now that Justin Bieber has his own movie, it’s clear that he’s more important than you are. But have you ever wondered how much better he is at Twitter than you are? Luckily, our friends at Esquire have come up with the perfect way of calculating just that. They’ve developed a formula to determine the exact monetary value of a user’s tweets. After comparing ourselves to Twitter’s most famous celebs we realized that there’s a major problem with their math.

The method that they’ve come up with is relatively simple:

  • Take Twitter’s $10B valuation and divided it by Twitter’s 195 million users = $51.28
  • Take anyone’s follower count, divide it by 27 (2010’s average follower count) = Tweet Cache Index (TCI)
  • Take the TCI, multiply it by $51.28 = Tweet Cache Index Value (TCIV)
  • TCIV divided by user’s number of tweets = #MyTwitterIPO

or ((followers ÷ 27) X 51.28) ÷ #tweets = HOW MUCH YOU’RE WORTH

So how much is Runnin’ Scared worth in Twitter land? Our numbers were so high we don’t feel like bragging (maybe they were under 50 cents apiece, who knows?). But there’s one little thing that the mathematicians forgot about Twitter: It’s about interaction. If the amount you tweet lowers your worth, the formula isn’t correct.

For instance, let’s take a look at Nicki Minaj. With 2,455,994 followers and 7,198 tweets, her tweets are valued at $648. That puts her somewhere between @biz and @stevemartintogo. But anyone knows that most of Nicki Minaj’s tweets are retweeting some of the thousands of @ replies she gets a day. If you scroll down her followers list, almost all of them look something like this:

Notice the Nicki Minaj-themed twitter handle and “Nicki followed me on such and such date” in the description. For someone like Nicki Minaj, influence cannot be calculated by math. “How many retweets your tweets have gotten” or “How many click-throughs your links get” would help.

Without this additional step, the social aspect isn’t being included in this study of a social network.
