Barack Obama Unveils New Budget; Gabrielle Giffords’ Speech Improves; the “Ice Audi” Runs Again


President Obama has put forth a new budget of $3.73 trillion for 2012, with “$1.1 trillion in deficit savings over the next decade through spending cuts and tax increases.” 200 federal programs would be trimmed or cut, while investments would be made in education, transportation, and research. The budget projects an all-time high $1.65 trillion deficit for 2011. [NYDN, WP]

Gabrielle Giffords is re-learning how to speak by mouthing words, lip-synching songs, and talking on the phone to her brother-in-law in space. “It’s not like she’s speaking the way she spoke, but she is vocalizing and making progress every day,” said Pia Carusone, Ms. Giffords’s chief of staff. Doctors continue to warn that still much is not known about how significantly Giffords’ mind has been affected. [NYT]

• The U.S. State Department has launched a new Farsi Twitter feed to attempt to connect with Internet users in Iran. As of Sunday night it had 8 followers. [CNN]

• Prince William has chosen his brother Harry as his best man for his upcoming wedding to Kate Middleton. Kate’s maid of honor will be her sister, Philippa. [Telegraph]

• The “historic” frozen Audi of Snowpocalypse 2011 is now running again, after $7,300 worth of repairs. And, to the luck of the owner, a dealer is replacing it with a 2011 Infiniti. [NYP]
