Sweets get all the attention on V-Day. It’s all chocolate and candy galore, with barely a thought to spare for the more savory pleasures in life. Yet, lovers cannot live on sugar alone. Oh sure, oysters get a shout-out. But if ever there were a dish to get the juices flowing (both in your mouth and your nether regions), then FishTag‘s Sea Urchin Crudo is it. After all, the part of the hermaphroditic animal we eat is its gonads.
Our own Lauren Shockey declared the dish a winner when she reviewed the restaurant. It’s not the most eco-friendly thing you could order; the urchin is flown in from Japan, bathed in the seawater it’s served in, recalling an era of dining luxury that predates the days of calculating carbon footprints before making a menu order. It’s served in a tall-stemmed coupe, swimming in nothing more than Japanese seawater, lemon, olive oil, and a sprinkling of red peppercorns that taste like candy. The texture of the urchin is soft, like live tongue — not the kind you eat, but the kind you make out with once you’re all hopped up on the aphrodisiac powers of a sea urchin’s sex organs. Over a recent meal, a waiter claimed that he once served the dish to a table as an appetizer, then again at the end of the meal for dessert. Hard to say if it’s true or not, but it would probably be more invigorating than a honking slice of cake before taking your sweetheart home.
