A four-headed creature — all masked, by the way — with arms as legs and vice versa, Narcissister is the strikingly schizo creation of a Brooklyn-based artist/performer who trained at Alvin Ailey’s Dance Center.
Directed by Rob Roth, Narcissister: This Masquerade — a one-hour romp at Abrons Arts Center — has our star twirling, unfurling, self-confronting, and transforming, pulling off dozens of burkas to reveal one more fabulous than the one before it, all while shaking off oppression to the beat of The Clash and Janet Jackson hits.
Did I mention that Narc’s real-life mother sits onstage bemusedly knitting, while another masked creature bangs a gong and others twist their body parts and bring the house down? Literally.
“I’m stuck,” the woman next to me said after the show, curiously unable to move. “What did I just see?”
That’s the greatest review you can imagine.
