The Violets’ men’s track team is enjoying a record-setting season, and a strong performance can be expected when it hosts the Division III Men’s Track and Field Championships. Watch for Daniel McKinney, who set a school record in the 200-meter dash on February 19, and freshman Gilson Cortes, whose record McKinney broke. Matt Turlip put in a record-setting performance on the mile (4:06:65) at the Valentine’s Invitational, the best posting by an NYU student since the school joined Division III in 1982 and placing him seventh-best Division III. Also, in the 3,000-meter, Andrew Zitek and Sebastian Schwelm rank in the top 10 in NYU’s Div III history. Bonus: The Armory Track and Field Center is located in the old Fort Washington Armory, a gorgeous Classical Revival building that is state-of-the-art for track and field events. It’s also home to the National Track and Field Hall of Fame, which alone is worth the trip uptown.
