With sparks flaring across the globe, from the Middle East to the Midwest and even our very own SoHo, what seems to be a moment for change is spreading rapidly. This weekend, New Yorkers will take to the streets in honor of two particularly relevant issues: women’s health, and violence prevention.
Walk for Choice: Saturday, February 26th
Scheduled to start at Foley Square at 11:00 a.m. and follow this route, ending back at Foley Square before the Rally for Women’s Health. With over 50 cities participating in the event across the country, the NYC walk is a pro-choice event aiming to protect access to abortion services. For more information, check out their Tumblr.
Rally for Women’s Health: Saturday, February 26th
Following last week’s passage of the Pence Amendment, a piece of legislation that would eliminate health care and education services for a projected 800,000 New Yorkers, Planned Parenthood has organized a rally for women’s health set to start at 1:00 p.m. in Foley Square. Slated speakers/performers include Senator Charles Schumer, Congress members Carolyn Maloney, Yvette Clark, Jerry Nadler, and Anthony Weiner, as well as NYC Council Speaker Christine Quinn, Kathleen Turner, Gloria Steinem, Kathleen Hanna, the Mountain Goats, Nellie McKay, Maddy Wyatt, Toshi Reagon and more. Don’t Shoot NY: Sunday, February 27th
As part of Operation SNUG, the Don’t Shoot NY rally and march will take place this Sunday at 3:00 p.m. and will follow a route starting at the United Nations and ending in Times Square. Co-sponsors Senator Malcolm A. Smith and Reverend Al Sharpton will be present. For more information, see here.
