Due largely to the photographic evidence Amanda Cohen exhibits on the Dirt Candy blog, “family meal” usually puts us in mind of heaping bowls of starch and pans full of sautéed vegetable matter. But the owners of Vesta, a small and superlative Astoria wine bar and trattoria, have taken it as the inspiration for their new restaurant, Pachanga Patterson.
The restaurant, which opened today, bills its menu as “Mexican food by New Yorkers” that is inspired by the staff meals that its three co-owners consumed during their years working in New York kitchens.
The owners, Giuseppe Falco, Leo Sacco, and Michelle Vido, who is also the executive chef, will be serving a menu freighted with Mexican staples like tacos and enchiladas, made and served with high-end, often local ingredients like Berkshire pork, Tortilleria Nixtamal’s tortillas and P&H soda. Like the dishes themselves, which include roasted pork belly enchiladas with chocolate-fig mole and moo shoo duck tacos, the restaurant’s name is a bit of a mash-up: “Pachanga” means party, and “Patterson” is the former name of 31st Avenue.
