Hamster Killer Will Not Face Justice

On Wednesday, the hunt for the killer(s) of Princess Stephanie and Sweetie, both hamsters, ended in the very same household where it started, with the 25-year-old son and 19-year-old daughter of Theresa Smith. “He kicked it deliberately, the ball flew across the room, the hamster flew out of the ball, and it died,” said the mother of a man who killed her nine-year-old son’s pet. She bought the kid three more hamsters, but her older daughter, 19, slammed one on the ground, killing that hamster, too. The daughter was arrested and charged with “torturing animals and endangering the welfare of a child,” but now the whole thing is going to disappear because the family witnesses are taking back their stories.

The New York Times City Room blog reports:

“The family members that were witnesses to this are not really supporting the story that she purposely killed the hamster,” said a law enforcement official.

A prosecutor, Ernest Chin, told a judge in Brooklyn on Friday that the case was being dropped because the father of some of the 10 siblings who live in the apartment would not allow them to testify before the grand jury, the Brooklyn district attorney’s office said.

“We stand by the integrity of our investigation,” said a spokesperson for the ASCPA, “and are saddened to know that no one will be held accountable for the violent death of this family pet.”

One one hand, rodents were tearing this family apart, so we understand the father putting the kibosh on the whole thing. On the other hand, how many innocent furballs must die before we stop this needless bloodshed?
