One of underground rock’s great guitar gods, J Mascis is best known for his soaring electric leads in Dinosaur Jr. and his solo work. His latest album, Several Shades of Why, is a bit of a departure. Performed mostly on acoustic instruments, it shows off Mascis’s ability to write the sort of touching, bittersweet songs Dinosaur Jr. are known for, but without the bells and whistles. Plus, it has a bevy of guests, including members of Broken Social Scene, Black Heart Procession, and Band of Horses–as well as tonight’s opener, Kurt Vile. With Call of the Wild.
