Happy 5th Birthday, Twitter!

Twitter, what would we do without you? Thank goodness we don’t have to consider that a possible reality. The very first tweet in the history of tweets was sent five years ago today, on March 21, 2006. It has since been improved upon, mightily. Via CBS:

McGinnis reports that Twitter launched with this humble phrase from its founder, Jack Dorsey: “just setting up my twttr.”

From that came the jokes, the laughs, the tears, the pain, the bonding, the news-breaking, the hashtags…THE TWITTER. Dorsey wrote today,

Twitter now has 200 million users who send something like 140 million tweets a day. It is a tribute to the “microblog’s” advancing age that even moms know about it. Happy birthday, Twitter! We can’t wait til you can drink legally.
