Many New York City restaurants are pitching in to assist with the crisis following Japan’s tsunami and earthquake, and this week Brooklyn Brine will be holding a special pickling class, from which 100 percent of the proceeds will be donated to Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières to assist with relief efforts.
The two-and-a-half-hour class will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday the 23rd and will cost $40. Owner Shamus Jones explained that when he normally runs classes, he doesn’t decide what vegetables to use until the very last minute. But to further reinforce the underlying purpose of the class, these will be Japanese-influenced: umeboshi vinegar-based slaw made with carrots and daikon. “We have distributors throughout Japan and Southeast Asia and they were at our factory [in Brooklyn] the day the tsunami happened. You realize that the world is so small and it’s really cool for us that we can give back,” explained Jones, noting that each participant will leave the class with three jars of pickles.
The class will be located at Brooklyn Brine headquarters at 574A President Street in Brooklyn, but interested parties must email Jones at firstname.lastname@example.org to register in advance for the class.
