It started out as a brightly painted cart selling ice cream at last summer’s Celebrate Brooklyn concerts in the Prospect Park Bandshell, featuring off-the-wall flavors like salted caramel, maple bacon, and stout ‘n’ pretzels. That experience motivated founders Jackie and Brian Smith to look for a real-estate-based location, and a corner storefront on Vanderbilt Avenue in Prospect Heights presented itself. The store is scheduled to open in one month, Fork in the Road has learned.

This evening, Ample Hills (the name comes from a Whitman poem, referring to Brooklyn as having “ample hills”) hosted a first look in the form of an ice cream social, featuring four flavors, a jazz combo, and wine. The event was mainly attended by friends and neighborhood parents with their kids. Though the price was $20 (a little steep, we thought), the curious were welcomed in from the sidewalk and urged to try the ice cream anyway.
The ice cream mix is made from scratch and pasteurized on the premises, and when the store officially opens there will be 24 flavors, plus coffee and cookies. At this moment, the storefront has only been roughed out, and lots of finishing still needs to be done.
