Trombonist Curtis Hasselbring augments his loud and tightly linked quartet–which includes Chris Speed (saxophone, clarinet) and Trevor Dunn (bass)–with Mary Halvorson (guitar), Matt Moran (vibes), Satoshi Takeishi (percussion), and Ches Smith (subbing on drums) for the premiere of Number Stations, a work inspired by mysterious numerical shortwave transmissions. Drummer Mike Pride’s group plays thick, thoughtful music that drifts in and out of harmonically familiar harbors.
