A music teacher in her younger days, she was in the original Broadway cast of Hair. In 1970, she was tapped for the pivotal leading young gal role in Purlie. So she deserves the Tony for effort, especially for a nightly shake-the-rafters delivery of “I Got Love.” Talk about using melisma to wow the crowds: she was one of the first. Now, she’s got “Forever Moore” up her sleeve and will undoubtedly reprise some of the earlier tunes associated with her, as well as others she relishes warbling.
