The Philly pianist has created one of the punchiest large ensembles in ages, a group that throws a bear hug around trad blues voicings, jolting solos, and old-fashioned rhythmic whomp. That last element is a signature trait: Evans could be playing alone and still push the crowd around a bit. The essence of community and shared ideas become obvious when the Captain Black crew takes the stand.
