New York’s women underpaid
A study conducted by the New York Comptroller’s office found that women earn 20 percent less than men — when they are are doing the same job and have the same credentials, according to the Spanish-language daily.
“It’s really pathetic that we keep having this conversation,” Councilwoman Melissa Mark-Viverito told the newspaper. Mark-Viverto made the statement in front of a group of women who were wearing red dresses to commemorate salary equity day.
Census data indicates that women make up 56 percent of the city’s workforce.
Hispanic women earn 62 cents on every dollar that Hispanic men earn, the paper reports. Black women make 71 cents on every dollar that black men make, and white women earn 78 cents per dollar that white men earn, the paper notes.
“It’s not surprising that women of color suffer more disparities. In the city government, we’ve seen a difference averaging 17.5 percent,” New York Comptroller John Liu told the paper. “I don’t want it to be that way, and we have to work on that.”
“Wall Street bosses and politicians think that women shouldn’t be in charge,” Brooklyn resident Grace McNeal told El Diario. “But so many women are now taking care of their families, there must be more salary equity.”
City Councilwomen Julissa Ferreras and Letitia James explained that they’re fighting for the Paycheck Fairness Act — which didn’t succeed in the federal legislature — to get passed at the state level.
“If you know your male co-worker makes more than you, you can talk to your employer about it,” James told the paper.
