Dir. Yasujiro Ozu (1957).
Ozu went for baroque in this chastely lurid family melodrama—replete with abortion, suicide, adultery and all manner of marital difficulties. Not his best movie but fascinating for its evident (and subsequently abandoned) attempt to keep up with frankness of Japan’s mid ‘50s new wave.
