Jack Smith’s chef d’oeuvre could be described as a cross between Josef von Sternberg at his most studiedly artistic and a delirious home movie of a transvestite orgy—except “transvestite” isn’t precisely the word for Smith’s gang of odalisques. Reviled, banned, rioted over, this is the only American avant-garde film whose reception equals that of L’Age d’Or.
