Kino-eye meets the radio-ear. Vertov’s first sound film, subtitled Symphony of the Donbass, makes brilliant use of contrapuntal audio effects. Nominally an attack on religion (brought to earth amid a cacophony of factory whistles and industrial ululation), Enthusiasm more fundamentally celebrated sound as a thing in itself.
