The title of Simon’s glorious new album, So Beautiful or So What, suggests that even the bard of multicultural singer-songwriter bliss has his doubts about the whole album thing. Nevertheless, bluegrass, doo-wop, and an African rhythm or two dapple tunes as transparent and memorable as anything the 69-year-old has written. Simon engages with a God who doesn’t quite give a fuck, and weighs the divine against the everyday to find them inextricably entwined.
