Competitive eating contests get some riled up, given that many live in a time of food insecurity, but they can also be sources of camaraderie and good eating. Whatever your opinions on timed gluttony may be, Japanese restaurant Go! Go! Curry is hosting its third annual curry eating contest this month.
Qualifying rounds are being held on May 5, 10, and 15, from 6 to 8 p.m., and the final event begins at 5 p.m. on May 28 at the restaurant, with both professional and amateur divisions. One contestant will even be coming in from Japan! While the pro tournament prize is a $500 American Express gift card and $55 worth of meal tickets, the amateur prize is a T-shirt and coupons. But maybe the real prize is watching people stuff themselves with Japan’s favorite comfort food, curry rice. Or perhaps watching and reveling in the fact that you won’t soon be gripped with immense stomach pangs and indigestion.
