Who says great gelato has to come from Italy? Indeed, Greenwich Village is about to become home to Amorino, a French company peddling the frozen delight.
The chain has done surprisingly well, with branches throughout France, as well as locations in England, Austria, Germany, and Spain. Impressive seeing as how the company was formed only in 2002 by two childhood friends, Cristiano Sereni and Paolo Benassi. According to the Amorino website, the company’s objective is to “make the highest quality ice cream as naturally as possible with no artificial colors or flavorings.”
This marks the company’s first American venture, and let’s hope it brings along its Eurocentric flavors (Speculoos cookies! Blood-orange crema! Yogurt!) to the corner of West 10th Street and University Place this spring, along with its beloved focaccina, a/k/a brioche stuffed with gelato. Because what’s better than eating a sandwich filled with ice cream? Yeah, pretty much nothing.
