Singer-songwriter Kate McGarrigle, who performed in a duo with sister Anna McGarrigle, was a beautiful fixture of Canadian folk from the ’70s up to her death in 2010. The sisters’ 1975 debut, Melody Maker, remains a seminal album in the country’s musical lineage. In America, she is arguably best known as the mother of the Wainwright performing brood, Martha and Rufus (from her marriage to American artist Loudon Wainwright III), and her prodigious children celebrate her legacy tonight at Celebration of Kate McGarrigle alongside Jimmy Fallon, Emmylou Harris, Antony (of Antony and the Johnsons), and more.
