Keiko Matsui

The performances on this Japanese virtuoso’s 2003 mostly-solo album, The Piano, demonstrated a sensitive touch and a fantastic sense of phrasing. Can’t say the same for her panpipe guy, unfortunately–the rest of the time, she comes from the verbed-out windchimes and airbrushed planetscapes school of New Age, largely intolerable except when she finds a killer theme to riff on (and even those must still suffer titles like “The Wind and the Wolf”). This show could go either way, but if she brings out a sax player, run for your lives.
