Here are the three best of many.
3. “Drink lots of water.”
At the time, I thought this was absolutely cuckoo.
But years later, I find it such sage advice that I’m currently as waterlogged as Shelley Winters in The Poseidon Adventure.
2. “Once you turn 40, your life will really begin.”
I thought this was beyond cuckoo — ready for the straitjackets, actually — and in fact felt that once you turned 30, everything was completely over, so how could your forties be your best decade?
But it now seems very prescient and spot-on.
It can be a decade of confidence, contentment, recognition, and everything-having.
So listen to daddy!
1. “All you need is nerve!”
That’s not technically true — you also need talent, dedication, and professionalism.
But at least that saying — repeated whenever my father watched various acts get the spotlight on variety shows — put the idea in my head:
“Be more nervy!”
And that was great advice.
Lord knows it got me this far.
So what did your parents tell you that turned out to be correct?
(Aside from “Stop masturbating or you’ll go blind.”)
