Joe’s Superette, the Smith Street deli with the missing “u,” is closing after more than 50 years in business.
Pardon Me for Asking reports that the Carroll Gardens institution is being emptied out today. Apparently its owner, Leo Coladonato, is having health problems and decided to close the deli, which was loved for its deep-fried prosciutto balls and sandwiches. Coladonato bought Joe’s in 1985 from its original owner, Joe, who ran the deli for many years with his wife and daughter.
In 2004, The New York Times described the shop as a “fluorescent-lighted relic amid the slick shops of Smith Street” whose “half-empty shelves” and “dusty canned food” made it a “mystery to many.” More recently, Joe’s, through no fault of its own, was in the news again for less salubrious reasons: Mark Iacono and Benny Geritano got into their knife fight on the sidewalk out front.
