An Evening in Rioja
The Tangled Vine Wine Bar & Kitchen
Monday, May 16, 7:30 p.m.

The wine bar, dedicated to organic, biodynamic, and sustainable Old World wines, will feature the infamous bottlings of Bodegas López de Heredia, made in pretty much the same way for more than 130 years. Maria Jose Lopez de Heredia will be on hand to discuss her wines, which will be paired with dishes by chef David Seigal, for $150.

Wellness in the Schools (WITS) Benefit

Monday, May 16, 6:30 p.m.

Help raise money for this nonprofit promoting healthy eating, environmental awareness, and fitness in public schools by eating some great food. Join WITS executive chef Bill Telepan of Telepan, and chefs from L’Artusi, Babbo, Boqueria, Butter, Craft, Fatty Crab, Gramercy Tavern, Perilla, and more for this tasting plus auction. Tickets start at $200.

Chefs Cook for Japan
The Harvard Club
Wednesday, May 18, 6:30 p.m.

Yet another opportunity to eat for a good cause is chef Masaharu Morimoto’s fundraiser for the Japan Society’s Earthquake Relief Fund. Marcus Samuelsson, Anita Lo, Jose Garces, and more will offer their signature dishes. Tickets start at $150.

Robert Craig’s Secret Cellar, Shhhhhhh

Wednesday, May 18, 6:30 p.m.

The Tribeca Wine Dinner Series continues with this pairing of offerings from Robert Craig, from the most remote reaches of Napa Valley, with such dishes as pigs in pretzels; grilled calamari stuffed with shrimp, merguez, romesco, and buttered almonds; and mushroom-stuffed saddle of venison with grilled radicchio and olive oil-crushed potatoes.

It’s like Oktoberfest, but in the springtime. Sample authentic German Paulaner beer, brats from Schaller & Weber, pommes frites, Bavarian pretzels, and traditional German music as Miss German America is crowned. Admission is $15, and a cruise ticket is $20.

Calçotada Festival
Sunday, May 22, 5:30 p.m.

Observed in Catalonia every spring, the festival comes to New York City. Calçots, a type of green onion indigenous to the region, is celebrated with the gusto of ramp-love here. The veggies are grilled over a large open-flame in front of the restaurant and dipped in the traditional salbitxada sauce (made with almonds, peppers, and tomatoes).

Proceeds from this two-day event will benefit the Columbus Avenue BID’S Beautification Project. Guest of honor Dana Cowin of Food & Wine will be joined by some 80 chefs, including Daniel Boulud, Missy Robbins, Bill Telepan, and Jacques Torres.
