Looks like it really is over when the fat lady sings: In sad but not particularly surprising news, Elaine’s is closing.
The New York Times reports that the restaurant’s longtime manager, Diane Becker, will close the restaurant on May 26, with last call scheduled for around 4 the next morning.
After Kaufman died on December 3 at the age of 81, many speculated that her restaurant, which she had run for more than 40 years, wouldn’t be able to go on without her. Becker, who had previously insisted that Elaine’s would remain open, confirmed that, telling the Times that “The truth is, there is no Elaine’s without Elaine.”
