HEART IN A BOX

There are longer roads from The O.C., but Death Cab for Cutie have wisely kept their sonic roots in the Great Northwest. Despite their great early-’00s success stemming from the popular drama (remember reedy Seth Cohen? Boy couldn’t shut up about Transatlanticism) and the ensuing mainstream hoopla, the introspective pop-rockers from Washington retain their cuttingly personal lyricism and inversely grand, lush production on seventh album Codes & Keys (out yesterday). Real pop talent can go Hollywood without losing its universality; credit due to singer Ben Gibbard and guitarist-producer Chris Walla for shaping their band from a college-radio secret to a massive success that still seems a special discovery.
