Tomorrow: Our 10 Best Legal and Sort of Legal Picnic Spots

Although this week’s weather could make you think otherwise, we have finally made it to picnic season. Picnicking in the city can be a fraught proposition: There are few other places in the country where you risk being dive-bombed by rabid pigeons, harassed by roving Hare Krishnas, and choked by bus fumes as you attempt to enjoy your meal. That said, New York also rewards its citizenry with little pockets of bucolic splendor and impossibly cinematic landscapes, making the hassle of transporting runny Brie across multiple subway lines more than worthwhile. Sometimes these places are where you’d expect them to be, but just as often they’re not. But when it comes to picnicking in the city, legality, like ramp butter, is overrated, and anyway, who wants to spend another year engaging in territorial skirmishes in Sheep Meadow? And so tomorrow we’ll celebrate 10 of our favorite spots, be they legal or not so much. Bring a good pair of running shoes, and possibly a chain cutter.
