If you’ve been a fan of their mad, carnivalesque music that ropes in fond memories of Zappa and Tom Waits, you might be put off by their latest album, Life Fantastic, which shows them leaping into “maturity” and more standard musicality. It’s not like this Philly crew has sold out or that they now stand a much better chance of radio play; they’ve just decided to keep the same tempo for more than a bar or two. They’ve also found that they’re not immune to dance music (via polkas) or melodies. If TV on the Radio can smooth out their sound somewhat and still make quality music, why can’t these guys do the same? With Shilpa Ray & Her Happy Hookers.
