It’s Memorial Day Weekend, which means frozen-treats season is officially in session. Like during every summer, the GelOTTO Cart will be parked in Washington Square Park, selling gelati from Mario Batali’s nearby OTTO. But this year, don’t come expecting olive-oil gelato.
“We like to entice people to go to the restaurant for the olive-oil gelato,” explained pastry chef Meredith Kurtzman, who happened to stop by while we were checking out the cart. Instead customers will find the following flavors: dark chocolate, vanilla, coconut, caramel (Kurtzman’s personal favorite), and a lovely sweet-tart lemon sorbet, although other flavors, like mint and strawberry, will be featured once they come into season. The $6 per cup price tag might raise some eyebrows, but as Kurtzman explains, the gelati is made with “top-quality products” like Valrhona chocolate, which doesn’t come cheap. Really, it’s a small price to pay for the thrill of summer.
