June is to clupeophiles — or herring freaks as they’re more commonly known — what March is to college basketball fans. Why? Because it marks the beginning of the all too brief New Catch Holland Herring season.
This year, the good folks at Russ & Daughters are kicking off the festivities on June 7, when they will hold the traditional first taste of the buttery, silver fish, which are known back in the Netherlands as Hollandse Nieuwe. They’ll only be available for a few short weeks, so get ’em while they’re cold.
On June 28, the appetizing mecca will formally celebrate the season with its annual Herring Pairing, which features various herring preparations paired with spirits from the Astor Center, where the event is held. Last year, Wylie Dufresne showed up to serve a herring dish he created specifically for the occasion; this year, April Bloomfield will step in to riff on the fish. Given what she’s done with marine life at the John Dory Oyster Bar, it’s safe to assume that she’ll give new life to the New Catch.
Tickets are $75, and can be bought both online and by calling the store at 212-475-4880.
