Since the 1980s, American Flatbread has been one of Vermont’s most recognizable food exports: Even if you haven’t been to one of its restaurant locations, you’ve probably seen its pizzas in the Whole Foods freezer aisle. And now the company is planning to export itself to Tribeca.
As the Tribeca Citizen reports, a franchise of the company is planning to open a location at the southwest corner of Hudson and Canal streets — and it may be the first of many. Reps for the company appeared at last night’s Community Board 1 meeting to outline their plans for their first New York outpost.
Unlike other American Flatbreads, they’re planning to open at 7 a.m. to serve coffee and breakfast, and they want to serve liquor until the very un-Vermont time of 4 a.m. Unsurprisingly, some board members weren’t thrilled by the idea of a late-night restaurant, even one serving whole grains; ultimately the reps agreed to a 3 a.m. closing time. They also indicated that they hope to open numerous franchise locations throughout Manhattan and New York. Hopefully the company won’t do for the smell of baking pizza what Subway has done for the smell of baking bread.
