Here is what you might call an unusual love story. Ned Nefer, a real, live man, is married to a mannequin, or at least says he’s married to a mannequin, and for summer this year they are vacationing upstate. Ned’s mannequin woman, who is named Teagan, is made of wood. Therefore she cannot walk. Nonetheless, the couple will be making their journey — 70 miles from Syracuse to Watertown — by foot, or at least Nefer will walk, pushing Teagan in a wheelchair. They are traveling to the former Children’s Home on State Street, where the two met. Via the Daily News, Nefer is quite happy, according to a social welfare examiner, and not “dangerous at all.”
“This is definitely one of the oddest things I’ve come across, but he seems very happy,” said Lisa Spear, principal social welfare examiner for the Jefferson County Department of Social Services.
There will be lots of picture taking on the trip. Nefer told the Watertown Daily News,
“We both really love the outdoors,” he said. “I hope it doesn’t rain because when it does, it fogs up the camera and the pictures don’t come out really good. We want to take a picture outside of the old Children’s Home on State Street.”
Teagan was apparently only a head when they first met, and he built her a body, which is way more than a lot of men do for their women.
There are a couple of Facebook pages for Nefer, including the “Syracuse Mannequin Man” and “The guy pushing the manequin.” Everyone seems to want to help him, giving him food and noting where they’ve seen him. And many people talk about Ned’s adoration of Teagan.
One Facebook fan writes, “I met him Sunday in Fulton. I stopped and asked him if it was a piece of art that he’d made. He got very serious and misty-eyed and said that she was his wife…25 years March 28th.”
Another says, “I am guilty of thinking ‘wtf is this weirdo doing’ after reading up on him and Teagan and the story of them, I realized I was too quick to judge, I was ignorant. My apologies Ned and Teagan, it seems as if Ned would do anything to make you happy Teagan. The questions in my head have gone away, and I don’t even care to know the true… all I see is pure love.”
