Your Cab Driver Might Be Documenting Your Taxi PDA

Kashmir Hill at Forbes presents a helpful reminder today. While the back of a cab may seem private and your personal space and whatnot, it actually is not. And, in fact, your cab driver may have a phone (of course he or she does) that he may be using to document your misbehavior, should you have any. Hill was in a cab at 2:30 a.m. on Saturday and started talking to her driver, who, after learning that she was a reporter, started to share his wild cab-driving tales. He showed her his phone, in which there there were some…special images captured. Of passengers.

Hill writes,

A woman was sitting on the lap of her companion, facing him, and his arm was down the back of her pants. My cabbie had taken the photo from the front seat of the vehicle. “Here’s another one,” he proffered, offering up a photo of a woman sleeping on the back seat, her head in her male friend’s lap. He, meanwhile, had lifted her shirt, and pulled her bra down, and was absentmindedly playing with her breasts. Faces were clearly visible, unlike the thong photo, though I did not recognize the amateur porn star passengers. (Good thing for them that facial recognition technology is not universal yet).

We kind of can’t help siding with the cabbie in instances of aggressive cab PDA, though the idea of documentation is creepy. The fact that the back of a cab is a public space (and that a third party is clearly there, within eye and earshot) may well be part of the thrill for the participants in the the first place. The protective customer loophole in this, if there is one, may be in this line in the taxicab rider’s bill of rights:

As a taxi rider, you have the right to: A driver who does not use a cell phone while driving (hand-held or hands free)

We’ve contacted the TLC to see what they have to say.
